Basement Finishing 101

If you’re like most homeowners, then you could probably use some extra living space. One way to get the additional room you need is to finish your basement. Our team at Installations Unlimited has over 40 years of experience in the home improvement industry, and we want to help you make your home (including the basement) the best it can be. In this article, we’ll go over some key information you need to know to make your basement finishing project a success.

Basement Finishing 101

  • Deal with Moisture. A critical part of any basement finishing effort is to effectively deal with moisture and prevent the problems it can cause. To do this, you may have to install waterproofing to prevent moisture from seeping in or install a sump pump to move moisture out of that space.
  • Install Insulation. If you plan to use your basement as a living space, part of your basement finishing efforts should be adding insulation. Without installing insulation to this part of your home, spending time there is likely to be pretty uncomfortable due to the lack of heat barriers. In addition, insulating this space will help improve your home’s overall energy efficiency, as well as keeping it more comfortable overall.
  • Consider Your Ceiling. Lastly, as part of your basement finishing project, you’ll need to decide what to do with the ceiling. While you could leave it like it is, the exposed plumbing and wiring is not the most aesthetically pleasing thing to look at. If you want to make your space look it’s best, you may want to consider adding a drop ceiling to cover that up and make the basement feel more like any other room in your home.
